Yes, got the Porsche... I think it was a 1989 Turbo. Paid for the car with a cashiers check and drove it back to LA. It was for export to Australia. I send a lot of cars to Australia. Well, I handle the logistics of shipping cars from the US to Australia.

My parents live in Australia, I live in LA. We load containers/clear customs/handle in the US trucking/clear customs in Australia for people. Lots of Australians buy old Mustangs, trucks , 57 Chevys, and Camaros. If they are old enough, they don't need to convert them to right hand drive.

Honestly though $3k in cash is not very much. My bank is probably the same.

@Sean - Did you end up buying the Porsche?

My bank only guarantees $3,000 available in a day. Anything over that they either need to get a branch manager exception, or they need to "order" a few days ahead of time. I'm assuming most of the banks work the same way.

Its harder to get cash now than it used to be. Recently when I tried to get $17,000 cash to pay for a car, I had to wait 3 days for my bank to "get it". I thought this was pretty ridiculous. 17k is a fairly small amount of money.

I have had someone ask for $30k in cash when I was paying for a Porsche from Arizona. I told the guy he was crazy if he thought I was getting on the airplane with $30k in cash. We found a branch of my bank local to him, and he took a cashiers check. I told the guy then, I was happy to wait on the check to clear, but carrying $30k in cash was not something I felt comfortable with .

You did three-times as much research as anyone else would. It seems like that you got all your bases covered. The last thing to do when you get there is to verify the correct VIN on the vehicle and eventually drive it to the dealership out there to obtain records of the services done. I think you should be Ok.

@Derek - Thanks for the offer, but the car is a bit far from you.

I won't be carrying around the cash, the transaction will all be done in the bank, and the seller will be taking the cash (so he should be careful!).

When you said half way across the country, I immediately thought that I am about half way across the country and could help you out - even drive the car back to VA for you, lol.

Given that all of the details check out regarding the car and the dealer, VIN, etc. I would think this sounds rather legit. However, I would still be cautious as carrying around that kind of cash can put you at risk.

If this is in my area, feel free to let me know if you would just like having another body along with you during the transaction.

Sounds like a pretty nice deal and I am looking forward to pictures if everything turns out as you hope.
